Gameplay & Plot FAQs
  • Is there a playable demo for the game?
    Spoiler below!
    No.
  • How many hours of gameplay can I expect?
    Spoiler below!
Depending on how the game is played, it will take roughly 5 to 6 hours to complete.
  • Does the game support custom stories?
    Spoiler below!
No. On the 30th of August 2013, Jens Nilsson posted a message explaining that A Machine For Pigs won't have custom story support because of the changes which had been made to the game's functionality, such as the lack of an inventory, which would have made things difficult for custom story developers. However, he also said that an update for the original Amnesia: The Dark Descent was under way which would allow custom story creators to use assets and other materials from the new game in the old engine. This includes full 3DMax support.
  • Does the game feature a lantern?
    Spoiler below!
Yes. Amnesia: The Dark Descent featured a lantern which required refills of oil. In Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs the lantern does not require refilling.
  • Is there a terror meter or similar audio cue for when the player is spotted by an enemy?
    Spoiler below!
Yes. In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, when a monster sees you, a screeching, wailing sound would constantly loop while you were in the monster's field of view. A similar audio cue is present in Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs.
  • Does the game come with a commentary track like the original?
    Spoiler below!
    No.
  • Do any of the characters from Amnesia: The Dark Descent make an appearence?
    Spoiler below!
This answer contains a light spoiler, so do not read on if you haven't played the game yet.

The game does not feature any characters from Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but Alexander and the Servant Grunts are alluded to in notes.
  • Are there other non-player characters with whom to interact in the game?
    Spoiler below!
This answer contains light spoilers and should not be read if you haven't yet played the game.

Apart from enemies there are non-lethal characters in the game who are encountered to varying degrees, including your character's twin children and several citizens of London. None of these characters is interacted with "directly", however.
  • In what ways does the game differ from the original?
    Spoiler below!
    • There is no survival horror aspect to the game, apart from evading enemies. For instance, you won't have to find oil for your lamp, tinderboxes to light candles or laudanum to replenish health.
    • Health now regenerates by itself.
    • There is no sanity mechanic or other penalty for remaining in darkness or staring at enemies.
    • There is no inventory in the game. Puzzles are solved using objects in "real-time" rather than storing them for later use.
    • The puzzles are simpler than those in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, adding to an overall simpler experience in general.
    • The game is much more linear than the original.
    • There is less interactivity with the game world. There is a great reduction in the number of in-game objects which can be picked up and moved around. This is because of system performance concerns.
    • There is no emphasis on hiding from enemies. In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, you would hide in wardrobes or close doors behind you as you flee from danger, with the enemies pursuing you and eventually breaking down the doors. In the current game, none of this takes place or is even possible; any wardrobes which do appear in the game are not usable and enemies are never in pursuit of the player through doors.
    • The game relies much more heavily on a disturbing story and "sense of place" than inducing immediate horror in the player. As a result, most players find the game to be less frightening than the original.
    • The game features more outdoor environments than the original.
  • What is the game's setting?
    Spoiler below!
The game takes place in December 1899 in Victorian London.
  • What is the game's plot?
    Spoiler below!
http://aamfp.com/ Wrote:The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus has returned home from a disastrous expedition to Mexico, which has ended in tragedy. Wracked by fever, haunted by dreams of a dark machine, he recovers consciousness in his own bed, with no idea of how much time has passed since his last memory. As he struggles to his feet, somewhere beneath him, an engine splutters, coughs, roars into life...
