Yeah. The Silent Hill games are completely based on the "fear of the unknown" according to the developers, that's why the first two are known to be so very scary. When they came out noone had seen the sick, disturbed creatures before and the games were really dark and creepy - you never knew where an enemy would appear or what it would look like. That's also why the newer games aren't as scary, because now we know exactly what the typical Silent Hill meatbag enemy looks like and know just what we'll encounter.
By the way derringers or something could be good for weapons. Pretty weak and only two shots, a common self-defense pistol around the 1800's I think. Don't know if they were invented when Unknown is set though.
