Could it be that, in the vein of Inception, we could have our characters existing inside nested layers within layers of virtual realities? That is to say, the people we see in the live-action trailers interacting with copies of themselves are, in turn, copies of the original person.

I like the irony of Imogen Reed dismissing the consciousness of the robotic Adam when she and the 'real' Adam are actually just replicas within another virtual reality.
