Pardon me for somewhat straying here, but I thought DXT4 was preferred? I haven't been working that much with dds files yet so I might be wrong, but do you know anything more about this compression? As far as I know, DXT1 only has opaque alpha, which I suppose is good for textures that don't require translucency (and in this case especially, because JPEG).
Personally I've been using DXT4. I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with doing so. I suppose DXT1 creates smaller file sizes than DXT4, so if you don't have any use for alpha, that's why it's preferred. Am I right?

When you say newest version, I suppose you're talking about the ones on the
tools download page and not the
beta page?
When you're trying .dds, did you make it correctly? Also, are you using a resolution powered by 2(for example 512x512 or 1024x1024)?
