The lack of a more robust save feature was an issue for me too. The game seems to be saying "don't worry about saving your game, we'll take care of that for you" like Amnesia did, but unfortunately it doesn't do a very good job of it. Manual saving should definitely be added, and a more frequent autosave wouldn't hurt either.
Knowing what to do next is also an issue, but for me this was only true for the first chunk of the game. Once I got the hang of it, and once I knew what the game typically required of me to progress, it became much easier to get a sense for what I had to do next and I felt increasingly more confident from then on.
Stick with it man, it's worth it!
