You have to remember the message in the game at the start, they amplified the insanity effects making them more pronounced and come on more rapidly to make them apparent over the course of the demo, i'm pretty sure the actual mechanic is about making the safe zones / danger zones of penumbra more seamless and dynamic, which would be a good thing.
