Explaining the enemies is completely unnecessary, although if you pay attention to diary entries and flash-backs there are some pretty heavy implications as to what the grunt and brute are. The nature of the Shadow is also explained, it's just the Kaernk that has no explanation.

I think you just need to pay more attention to your diary entries and flashbacks because there ARE answers to your questions there. The only legitimate complaint is the lack of information on Agrippa and Weyer, but from my understanding that was due to budget being tight/running out of time.
