PlayerStart area refuses to work

Make sure there is no other start area (use the search function in the editor), the game should use the first area it finds, so if there is only 1 area then that area should be used.

You should also open the user_settings.cfg file in My Documents/Amnesia/ for your user and make sure that you enter the name of the area in the PlayerStartArea (I think it is called that), which is in the <map line
