Do you have any experience with Interactive Fiction or Inform 7 at all? If not, I recommend you check it out. There's quite a few IF games (http://ifdb.tads.org/ is a good place to start) that can be played online, and can be an extremely immersive and rewarding experience. One example, as mentioned before, is Anchorhead. If you love Lovecraftian horror, then you'll love/adore this game. Try it!

Inform 7 today is often considered the standard for IF in general, and with the immense amount of documentation online and on Inform 7, it can be fairly simple to learn/write/code. The program itself comes with everything you will need to get started (including documentation, as mentioned before), so if you're interested, download it.
