Transistion from La-tern to flashlight?

is it possible to make the player from using the latern and start using the flashlight upon picking it up?

But to answer, I'm not sure if it will work but it might. Though I know right now that it has to be a conversion mod. When you have the lantern and pick up the flashlight, maybe script to remove the lantern from your inventory when you interact with the flashlight, therefore it switches out. But again... I don't think it's going to work.
