Mainstream Games are so bad nowadays

In new games I also get the impression they're often underestimating their players.

I don't think they're underestimating the average player. Just look at them and look at the most popular games these days - they're as simple and dumbed down as they can get. Most kids just don't have the attention span for challenging games and learning things on their own anymore.
