The portals seem to have been built as a quick transport between parts of the facility. (human archaic.) There are mentions, maily from Dr eminiss in the first 3 - 4 levels, after which red talks about himself and rambles on. I rather liked requiem in terms of structure.

Dear God... The Archaic must have more advanced tech than we thought... :-)

Red and Eminiss coming back to life as hallucination-based voices ?
Penumbra sure gets more psychedelic from episode to episode... :-D
