One can install this openal version (works with ubuntu) for work around this problem (you have to disable the openal provided with the game) :

http://ftp.debian.org/pool/main/o/openal...1_i386.deb
or http://ftp.debian.org/pool/main/o/openal..._amd64.deb

works with sacred gold too
