I thoroughly disagree with you. In case you've never read a Lovecraft or Poe story, NOT being told everything is a major part of the horror and interest. The confusion that arises from what the shadow is, who the characters are and what's happening in general are one of the defining features of such types of horror stories.

It's fun to go off, aside from the game, and find out about the real Agrippa, the area surrounding Brennenberg, the Algerian tomb. It's also great that the mystery of where Alexander is from and what the portal leads too is kept. It actually, shock horror, allows the player to think about what it could be.

To me, many a game has been ruined by wretched "explanation" flashbacks or similarly poorly implemented ways of telling as much backstory as possible. It's just completely out of place with what a person like Daniel would actually discover in a situation like his.
