to not bring any weapons with them, i mean c'mon, who's going to go into an area where there's signs of alien life and not take a weapon. This is true, but in the beginning they didn't know that there was life. They weren't there to kill aliens, they were there for answers. It just so happens that when the humans went into the storage room they changed the temperature enough to disturb the vases, thus causing the quick mutation of the worms (this theory is backed up by when David went into the ship for the first time and passed the cargo holds full of vases nothing was happening as he is synthetic). They did bring weapons with them when they brought Weyland to see the Space Jockey as it was a confirmed life form.
