My definition of "displaying correctly" though is no black bars, stretching or cropping which isn't possible with incompatible ratios.

True on that. However, with my current setup I use the 4:3 setting since I hate the stretching but still don't want to miss any information but still want to use the highest possible resolution, hence the question.

Why do you want 1600x1200 anyway?

Some older games don't have native 16:9 support so they stretch the image if set to that resolution.

Fair enough. Well sorry that I couldn't be of any real help. Good idea for a thread BTW, but I'm not so sure it's practical.
