The size of a map will not cause a crash. It will only crash if you messed something up.

A cache file is good for loading times, as it brings the time down. But it takes up a good amount of memory space. It's recommended to have them when sending a finished story out.

The engine generates the map_cache automatically. Again, run the level in MapView. The .map_cache will be generated in the same location the map that you loaded was in.
