I was trying to avoid asking for help, but I just can't figure something out.

I was pushed to the bottom of the elevator shaft and once that event was over I was in a completely pitch black area except for a shiny object ahead and flames behind. If I go towards the shiny object I am always killed by the monster that spawns (which I cannot see).

No matter how much time I spend in this area I can never find a way out because except for the two objects mentioned above I can't actually see anything. Is this some kind of bug or am I not seeing something obvious.
