Well yes I agree not all of them make for pleasant listening outside of the game. The example I had in mind however was "The Day of Night" from Silent Hill 2.

Right but that was my initial point. These are both very twisted horror games, and it's not reasonable to expect every piece of the soundtrack to be pleasant listening material by themselves.

It really has nothing to do with whether or not it's "pleasant listening material", just the aesthetics and textures of the composition. For example, I consider this pleasant listening material:
