Now I have the impression that Mandus' body was in the machine and, to fix it, he sent his consciousness to one of the pigs. But that wouldn't explain how he destroyed the machine in the end.

There's no direct evidence that I see to support that theory. Twisting things to fit a theory isn't evidence, just compensation.

You are right.

The pigs could see themselves as humans. Having a human hand doesn't prove Mandus is human, just like seeing dead children doesn't mean they are not dead. BUT there is no evidence of Mandus being a pig, so there is no point twisting.
