So, you want programs for 3d modeling...I think that 3D's max is a good one ,I don 't know if you can get it free really, maybe if you had a FileList account you could get it free, but in fact Blender is really good at modeling and it's a free software so
you probably want it.

Just use Blender or Maya on a Student License. I would expect 3DS Max to have an official download on their site rather than relying on say, FileList (not that I've ever heard of it).

Either way, it's not necessarily difficult to make a coin.
