Please help

The place where this happens is: (I've copied the location);

17th May 1839 Stone Wall...I was trapped

(Right before the blackness)

This will help you to help me

I am at the point in the game:

Total Pitch Black Darkness

No access to inventory
No access to lamp with oil

Nothing but dark and scratching sounds

I've tried following the scratching sounds and moving the mouse in the direction of the scratching sounds EAST to WEST WEST to EAST..makes no difference

Character remains in pitch black darkness No way to get out Please Assist
