By "the first half" I assume you didn't found the key in "Mansion of Nightmares"?... There is supposed to be a key in that room with 3 doors, but somehow for me it appears invisible... I don't know maybe it has something to do with these chests being bugged or something.

there are like 9 levels to play

9 levels ? :O I thought the game ended when I picked up the laudunum and sanity potion from that chest up the stairs with the blue torches. I dunno where to go now . Also... there is an invisible wall in a room from that hallway before you enter the house of nightmares.
