Is this the type of direction you were going for? It not, while it's not steampunk, how about this nightmarish monster by NickDShultz http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs9/i/2006/06...chultz.jpg

You and your Lovecraft! (What the hell am I saying? I fantasize of reanimating him, just like Herbert West.)

Let's find his remains, extract the essential salts and rise him. The Rock Worm, you come with us?

This monsters are not scary because they looks like clichée.
Big bizarre monsters are not scary because they are unrealistic. I think they are laughable. Scary are monsters like real animals or some kind of human similar. For example the suitors in Justine, the infected or even the dogs in Penumbra, because they look plausible and real.

Typical Doom monsters are just "enemies" to splatter their heads off.
That would be more fun than scary.

But I think you know that, you are a good old Penumbra supporter.
Not like all the newbies who think Amnesia should be multiplayer or action.

True, I do know that. I am a ;good old Penumbra supporter'. Penumbra, like you said, had realistic monsters. This, and the story, made it all feel like this could really happen. I never felt that with Amnesia, even though it did have some better game mechanics than Penumbra.

After first seeing the Penumbra Worm, I looked up real world predatory worms. I've seen a lot of worms (including deep sea predators) that look even freakier/frightening than Penumbra's Worm.

These fellas I'd love to see some form of in Amnesia. So check out...

Bobbit Worm: mouth open http://www.tonywublog.com/wp-content/upl...bobbit.jpg ; holding its prey http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2024/3527...f669_b.jpg ; mouth closed in its head http://www.oceanwideimages.com/images/16...30-37D.jpg

Eulagisca gigantea [deep sea worm near Antarctica]: close up of head http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2445/35776...z.jpg?zz=1 ; full body view http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4w6z0...o1_500.jpg

Arrow Worm : full body, mouth closed http://blogs.discovery.com/.a/6a00d8341b...970b-800wi ; zoom in, mouth open http://papillondaniel.free.fr/images/Chaeto%20head.gif

Kermadic Ridge Worm While the image doesn't show it, it has the Alen/Xenomorph extenable mouth! http://images.nationalgeographic.com/wpf...00x450.jpg

Your totally right. I don't know how some people can think multiplayer would be good on a Amnesia game. Dead Space 3 will have that. But Dead Space is nothing as scary compared to Amnesia. If you play with someone then it won't be as frightening.

Just because a monster looks unrealistic to you doesn't mean it's not horrifying; you're equating 'real' to what you know, which is a lazy and unfortunate practice many of us do with recognizing its sense of ignorance. We live under very precise circumstances to which provided us the the genetic diversity we know now; given such a limited biological pallet, can't you comprehend that some things may be beyond what you've so far seen?

Take jellyfish, for example; people were all kinds of freaked out when introduced to the stygian, frameless blobs with electric appendages and luminescent tissue. Or elephants? They pick shit up with their long-ass nose, and hear shit with the giant, flap-like ears on the side of their bloated heads!

The reason you find the Infected scary is the same reason I find the Grunts terrifying: They're a perversion of nature. The nature as we see it. The nature we've developed for a billion years to see as we do -- with a sense of order and control; understanding. When something strays from this, it frightens us. When something comes from a completely different road. . . to ours, it horrifies us.
