No, I'd say that's how the world works. All ideas come from somewhere and simply having the same idea doesn't mean it's necessarily derivative because it's the subtle details and the general execution that really matters. For example, I would say that Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Robocop are pretty much the same fundamental story on the surface. Mainly: Guy gets augmented against his will to save his life, loses his loved ones and it's set in a dystopian crime-filled Detroit. Hell, they even make a direct reference to Robocop at one point. Does that mean that Deus Ex: HR is a rip-off? No, because they did something completely different with it and it ends up being nothing like Robocop. Art and entertainment are always about the subtleties of the directing and writing.

Let's be honest. After over 20 years of media, every idea has probably already been used in one way, or another. It's almost impossible now to see something 100% original.

What matters now is the execution. it depends on if the game devs are able to take a mish-mash of ideas, and present them in a appealing matter. If they do it successfully, it doesn't really matter if what they based it off wasn't 100% original.

Like I always say: A lot of good creativity is just extended thought.

More like after millenia of art. People didn't start having creative ideas just 20 years ago, and many things people point at as being "100% original" can be indirectly traced back to something else before it. All art comments on and expands upon the art that came before it and there's nothing wrong with that. Being 100% original is not a worthwhile goal, because it would probably mean your art would be completely alien and unenjoyable. Taking existing ideas and using them in a creative way is real originality and these are the movies, games, books and music that are called "original".

I don't really see this as a major deviation from the thread. It's normal for a few posts to pop up concerning a statement brought up by a member (This/my post right here ironically is one). It's okay as long it doesn't spark a full out full discussion on it. From the way I see it currently, that's in no danger of happening.
