Oh man, why are the best games only HL2 mods?
I don't have HL2 (shooters makes me ill) and I do not want steam (DRM makes me more ill).
There's a standalone version of this great looking game?
Thanks Deep One, anyway.

Thanks Deep One, anyway. You can play it for free, just download Steam and install Source SDK. Don't be so critical, you don't have to buy anything Steam isn't going to sell your PC specs to North-Korea.

RE: Penumbra is real - possible inspirations?
There was a story of Lizard men(Reptilian beings) abducting people in one of the underground cavern/mine system.People would enter them and never return. There are these reptile/insectoid being living deep beneath the earth and those aren't just legends.I honestly would never enter them, hell risking my life in a dark place where nobody could here me scream. No thanks.
Look up the movie called "DESCENT". There is a lot of truth in that movie. They went too deep and BAM!
Lost tapes did 2-3 episodes of these Lizard walking creatures.

RE: Penumbra is real - possible inspirations?
has spoiler at end of bp. I wouldn't be able to stay in any of those places I have like an over active imagination so if I went in there I would be trying to ram the door back open after about 2 minutes, if I had a couple friends that were also like me I would ask them to go to Greenland with me to those coordinates N81.6914, W58.3154. I guess I would have to persuade them.

If you happen to visit Germany, you can take guided tours to many of its Penumbra-esque underground places i.e. under the cities of Berlin or Hamburg:
