just a question

this may sound off topic...maybe. but this CS im working on is my first one. do i need to have a lot of scripting in my first CS to make it good?
and does it have to be long.

All dependes on YOU \ your imagination \ your story \ your puzzles.. etcetc..
A good story can be 30 min...
Also a good mod can be 4 hours, as long as the players can be excited and scared (scared for Amnesia hehe)
But, the more scripts is more interaction with the mod, and getting more scared.
If you have 5 effects or 150 effects makes a hell of a difference.
Its all up to you.

It's not necessary. What is important is your own imagination and creativity. Make something interesting and unique and it will be well received even if it only lasts for a few minutes. If you see the custom story String, it's a very short one that focuses on unique level design. It does that very well.
