I don't think it had that much to do with that it was a dead body.
For example, pretty much everyone have jumped for the part in Tech Demo, where Hunter is in the ceiling and it suddenly falls down.
When you are inside the game world and you are getting into the right feeling, and then something loud just happens, it makes the "jump" effect.
However, people are different.
Other people are more sensitive than the others. There for, there ain't the one and correct thing to scare everyone.
For example, someone does scare dead bodies (as said before), others don't. Someone gets almost heart attack when those screamers come and someone just doesn't scare, no matter what.

@Lee
Nothing scares you?
Why are you here then?
Games like Penumbra and Amnesia are very boring, if you don't scare you.
I don't believe you!

I said nearly nothing scares me (like dead bodies, screamers, et cetera). Penumbra scares the fuck out of me.

A old castle in 18th century and the environment is not so dirty and dark like in Penumbra.
What about the Horror in this game?
the maps have too much brightness and there are not much scary moments.
Or I see it wrong?
We have not seen a trailer or a video that demonstrate true eerieness.
The game looks like USK 12.
Frictional Games, I do not like brutality but I like it, if the horror means eerieness. So, that your own blood freezed.
Can you built-in scary moments like this here?
(Picture: The Grudge 3)
A horror-game without corpses or bloody floors is not a true horror-game.
Or we have not seen the real eerieness.
A horror game is about whats around you. Not bodys or blood, but sometimes they help alert when a monster is near.

It's the player who make most of the experience, not the game itself. ;-)

Yeah take for example you were Chuck Norris. I'd feel safe all the time.

I think a 18th century castle has great potential to be scary! Think of all the damp dungeons, creaky stairs, suits of armor, creepy paintings etc!
I don't think lots of blood or corpses is Frictional's style really, it is more psychological horror. I have full faith in that the game will scare the shit out of me... and I don't scare easily!

RE: What about "Horror" in Amnesia?
I greatly prefer modern sci-fi horror over old castles.
Dark concrete wallways, flickering lights, malfunctioning electronic doors, ventilation shafts, elevators and so on. The more modern, the more I believe I can relate to it living in a modern society.
I've made a list of things I'd like to see in a Penumbra-like sci-fi horror game including PDAs (great for all information you don't want on the game screen such as a map, objectives, notes etc), walkie talkies for communication, lighters, padlocks and lots of other stuff. Also viruses, mutations, electromagnetical disturbances or other physical anomalies are pretty hot nowadays.
I think Penumbra have managed to catch a lot of interesting things in one game: there's most of the above in one of the games as well as other interesting things like the blood sample test and a secret organisation of some sort, the Archaic.
Another game I really like the theme of is FEAR. I love the idea of all the clone soldiers controlled by a psychic and the scene where they are all "deactivated" was really cool. There's plenty of technological stuff in FEAR and the whole main plot is pretty cool in my opinion. I like the "warfare" against the paranormal ghosts and all that, it's more like a war instead of just one terrified school student or something going at them. FEAR is pretty grand-scale with a whole city in ruins and all.

RE: What about "Horror" in Amnesia?
Too bad FEAR isn't scary.
I've been thinking up a horror game for a little while and it has a ton to do with modern technology and cybernetics jargon. The ideas I've come up scare the willies out of me.
