For some reason going through doors randomly causes the game to slow down to less than 1 FPS.

I can't find a pattern to it, but once it has happened with a specific area the only way to fix it has been to exit, start and change resolution, then restart again and play at new resolution. If I am currently in the room that is running slowly and I have a save point within the room, just reloading that save will also fix it.

Possibly of note is the installer gives me the "Couldn't find any suitable frontend for your system" error, but I just ran the installer with the --tar option and installed it with the startupinstaller.sh

Computer is nvidia 7800GT with latest nvidia drivers, gentoo x86_64 with 2.6.33.3 kernel. As far as I can tell all 32 bit libraries are installed.

$ find /usr/lib{,32,64} -name "libstdc*so.*"
/usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8
/usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.5

/usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.5.0.7
/usr/lib32/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2
/usr/lib64/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/32/libstdc++.so.6.0.13
/usr/lib64/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/32/libstdc++.so.6

/usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.5.0.7

$ file -L /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.5

the installer doesn't use the stdc++ lib anymore (it's using a statically linked stdc++ lib now). How much free space do you have on your /tmp partition? (as that could be why the installer isn't working).

Now one thing to try would be to install your distribution provided libs for everything in the game installed libs folder. And then "rename" the libs folder in the game install..

Those libraries are

libCg and libCgGL (nvidia's Cg usually in one package)
libGLU
libSDL
libSDL_image
libSDL_ttf
libalut (free alut)
libopenal (open-soft's version please)
libfltk
libjpeg (should already be installed
libogg
libpng (should already be installed)
libstdc++
libvorbis
libvorbisfile

So I renamed /lib to /lib.bak and filled /lib with symlinks to my system libraries. libCg, libCgGL and libfltk are not available to me as 32 bit through gentoo, so I reused the stock libfltk and downloaded libCg/libCgGL from nvidia's site. This did not fix the problem, however when the slowdown occurs it no longer drags the esc menu down with it, so I can actually quit the game.

For example, I previously explored shaft 12, and then subsequently shaft 13 in Chapter 3. I then found it necessary to return to shaft 12, but upon entering the door to 12 the game instantly drops to 1FPS at which point I have to just quit. Up until this point I have been able to fix these slowdowns with a mixture of game restarts and playing with the game video settings, but this has been unsuccessful for this point and I cannot advance in the game.

The game runs perfectly smooth at highest detail until these slowdowns occur btw.

Can you provide e saved game file just before returning to level 12 with directions to get back there and i will test is on my system. Also you don't need to put symlinks in the lib directory as if it's not in the lib directory it will look for it in the system directories.

The save is too large to attach, heres a link to it http://people.rit.edu/jcs3370/Iron%20Sha....48_62.sav

Just turn around and the door to shaft 12 should be right there. For me, the game is fine until I enter the door, at which point the slow down occurs. Within chapter 3 the slowdown also occurred in one other place, the refinery, but I was able to fix that one by dropping the resolution down to 1024x768. I don't think it was the resolution that fixed it so much as it was the changing of the resolution forced it to reload something Undecided
