Help with looneys

Since this is a nice gathering place for horror loving people I thought I'd try something here. I need help with researching about mad houses and crazy people.

I'm trying to write something about a lunatic. The story starts at a mad house. But I know little of madhouses and even less about symptoms and such that lead people in there.

Not knowing the english terms that relate to such things, googling becomes a little hard. If anyone could point me to somewhere where I can read about such things or if you can help me with tips or something. Whatever comes may be helpful.
