How do you make part of a model glassy?

Hello,

I have been trying to make part of my model have a glass texture applied to it. I know this is possible as some of the lanterns on the wall have the glass applied to them. I attempted to create a material, but applying the material to the seperate glass polygon did not do anything... it still used the texture information from the whole model. I tried to make the texture for the glass part transparent in my dds then apply the material, nothing. I tried to make it glassy in Maya, then export it, nope.

There doesn't seem to be a material associated with the lamp in question (entities/lamps/hanging_wall, or something) and there are no .dds files...

There is only a .dae and a .msh.

I imported the .dae into Maya, but it lost its texture and appeared all gray :S

Please, someone explain this wizardry Sad

I am still very unfamiliar with Maya, but as far as I know, it's easier to do in 3ds Max. The material editor is very visual; it lets you create a flowchart of your bitmaps and then drag it on to your viewport to apply the texture to the object of your choice.

Anyways, if you don't want to try that out, try this: Create two seperate mesh files, one for your glassy part and one for your non-glassy part. Apply the textures to them and export them seperately. Then place them seperately in the LevelEditor. This obviously will only work for static objects, but that's the only solution I can present, seeing as I'm still new to Maya.

Also, try checking out the Maya Tutorial channel on YouTube: here

I'm pretty sure the glassy texture is done outside of Maya...

That looks complicated but I think that's what you're looking for?

It's grey because it's probably looking at the dir from one of the frictional guys computers. If you check hypershade, it should still say what the texture is. As for what textures are there, if you check in modelview, it will say what ones are used on the right.

Hmm dont understand Mr.Bigzy, because of my english
Take a look at the elevator lamp, you need a in this case called cubemap that you can find in the texture folder, and you need to change the settings in the.mat file.
The Type has to be "translucent" -->Type="translucent" and add the cubemap here too under textures...
Just copy the settings from the elevator lamp ^^
edit: and thx for reminding me to do something with glass

Hello my friend, stay a while and listen
