first or third person?
I've just started making a custom story, and I was wondering whether you all found it more immersive if the statements which show up onscreen are in first person, or third person. I will add a few examples of some things in my story, with alternatives, could you let me know which version souds better, thanks
example 1:
1: - I can just fit my arm through the bars.
2: - The bars are wide enough to fit an arm.
3: - You can fit your arm through the bars.
example 2:
1: - I can't pick this lock.
2: - This lock cannot be picked.
3: - You can't pick this lock.

RE: first or third person?
I think it's a tight call, it depends on how important the main character's role is. It's pretty much a choice you will have to make. I can't really decide which one I like the most. At least option one or two before three in both examples, though.

RE: first or third person?
thanks, the only reason i asked is because it's you guys who will be playing the story when it's released, not me, so i thought i'd get some feedback. I've ruled out opton three, i agree that it's not as good as the other two. I think i've decided to use a combination of 1 and 2, which gives the effect of him 'thinking' it, eg: "It seems that the sewer grate could be unlocked with this key"

RE: first or third person?
Third person is defnitely not immersive- that's the game telling me, the player, what to think. First person is much more so, because it is telling me what the character I am playing is thinking. I can form my own thoughts that way.

RE: first or third person?
Yeah, i agree on that. The only doubts i had with first person is if i state something which the player wasn't thinking at the time - it would spoil the immersion. Simple example: "I could break these bars somehow" - what if the player had no idea that those bars were breakable... Anyways, thanks for the feedback, thats pretty much confirmed that first person is the way to go.

Are the people in this thread having no life?
This is a useless discussion and should be in the offtopic section

RE: first or third person?
Why exactly is it useless, ferryadams10? The OP wanted to ask questions on preference regarding something in his custom story. These type of questions and decisions might ultimately be what separates your story from the next one. It is as rightfully discussed here as any scripting or mapping question.
Off-topic is meant for threads not related to Amnesia, how is this not affiliated with just that?

RE: first or third person?
If you're still deciding, then I think the first 2 options are the most appropriate.

RE: first or third person?
I like the first option best. And Ferryadams, stop being so cocky...
