Hm. Would you mind uploading the model so that I may have a look at it?

I'm quite new at modeling so I'm uncertain what you have done with the model Smile There seems to be a lot of bad normals - this happens when the distance between two vertex points is negative.

RE: A very basic guide to creating your first model in Maya

I re-did the steps and i now managed to load it into modelview, but of course a new problem has introduced itself. i'm not exactly sure what i did wrong this time but i cannot select the textures from the diffuse tab inside the material editor, the file is invisible for the file-browser as if it was in wrong format or something.. Dodgy

Here are my files http://www.mediafire.com/?v7m4shsh2au3nhi

The texture you created was somehow corrupt or incorrectly converted. I have made a very simple dds for you and the model works Smile Congratulations on your first model!

The whole thing; UV mapping and adding textures? Or one of them?

As for adding textures refer to picture 12 & 13. I might have to write a more extended guide on UV mapping someday Smile
Edit: Adding a texture step by step:
1. Click your object (remember to do it in object mode)
2. Select your material. It is displayed on one of the "tabs" to the right of the 3D window.
3. Click the "checkerboard" next to color.
4. Select "File"
5. Select your file
