I use the crowbar to enter the light-emitting door at the end of the incinerator section. I see the intro text to the next chapter. As soon as the loading's done, instead of seeing the green "click to continue" text, I crash to the desktop.

Here is the error I receive:
"penumbra.exe caused an exception_access_violation in module penumbra.exe at 0023:0058C050"

I've attached a screenshot of the error dialog, including the Stack Trace.

I'm running the Steam version of Penumbra: Overture. Here's my system configuration:

Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM, dual-channel
Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 1GB, driver version 195.62 released 11/26/09
MSI P55-GD80 motherboard with Intel P55 north bridge and latest BIOS
onboard Realtek ALC889 audio and Realtek 8111DL LAN
Intel SSDSA2M080G2GC boot drive
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS storage drive (where game is installed)
Win7 64-bit with all latest patches

Thanks in advance if anyone can help. I hate that I've gone through almost the whole game, and now can't finish it...

I think it will be fixed if you install this hotpatch:

Hi there, thanks for the quick response. I just got home and tried the patch - no luck. Followed all the instructions to install the hotpatch, get the same result after opening the last door: See the intro text for the next chapter, and instead of getting a message that the game's done loading, I crash to the desktop.

By the way, I hadn't mentioned before but I already tried wiping my config file.

Edit: So I think my game files are corrupt. I tried running Overture on my old computer (totally different specs, but I'd copied over the same game files), and the game crashes at the exact same point. I ran a Steam verify and it detected problems in some files, so I deleted the game entirely and am re-downloading. Will respond again when I try running the fresh copy.
Yep... corrupt game files. Loaded fine once I re-downloaded.

Thanks again for the help, I appreciate the quick response.

I'm getting this as well with the Steam version, even after deleting local content and reinstalling it's still happening. Exactly the same thing. I've used the hotfix, I've cleared the settings.cfg as well as the core/cache folder. I don't know what else to do.

=================

Okay so I've just installed the Penumbra Collection that I've bought my brother from your own shop and while I managed to get through the door, pick up the note and go down the stairs it crashed in a similar fashion right in front of the door and does the same on repeated attempts. Sad: I'm so close to finishing it.

---------------------

My apologies, I'm going to try the 1.03 patch again on the Steam version, I may have installed it incorrectly.

Solved: 6 Years, 11 Months ago RE: Overture crashing near the end of the game, once final chapter loads

Just to clarify what occurred to me for the sake of others having the same difficulties:

As with jbone above, the Steam version kept crashing just after entering the glowing hydraulic door near the end of the game. It went to the loading screen with the narrative text on and then crashed to the desktop displaying the Black Box crash dialogue boxes above.

I tried clearing the settings.cfg, the core/cache folder, reinstalled it, verified the integrity of the game cache, applied the ATI hotfix and still no luck.

After some more hunting it turned out that the game needed patching using the 1.03 patch which you can download here. I know Steam is supposed to keep the version up to date but for some reason it can be bodged and the above patch needs to be applied. Please note that the installation path is slightly different for the Steam version. It should be:

<SteamPath>\steamapps\common\penumbra overture\
The patch will try to put "episode 1" at the end; this isn't needed so delete it. After that it should work fine! Check in the folder though to be sure as I did it incorrectly at first.

Oddly however, the version I downloaded from the Frictional Games online store crashed at the bottom of the stairs AFTER the glowing hydraulic door as described above. I haven't tried solving that so it may be worth trying the above.

I hope that helps.
