If the difficulty level had to do with the puzzles i would set hard, sence it deals with the monsters, i just set medium, it's not really an action game, i find it inconsequential how those are set, just makes the monster battles a little more redundant, maybe even if it made them smarter. (I personally wouldnt be upset to see the battles with monsters taken out all together and it made more like the worm "battle" in that you try to avoid it, instead i enter a room and i say "oh this looks like a dog room" pull out my pick axe and go hunting until its clear then continue to the puzzle

Sometimes developers, given their intimate knowledge of their game, don't provide adequate testing of the difficulty settings and so when you play a game on Hard, thinking you're real tough and skilled, you might find it hopelessly frustrating on your first playthough. That's why I tend to play on medium first and hard on future playthrough. The problem is alleviated somewhat with a lot of modern games which allow you to change the difficulty at any point in the game.
