I fully agree on that, Umbra. To be honest, Penumbra would not be good source material for a movie. And if someone nonetheless came up with an ASB idea of making one, it would have to be more of a indie horror to be interesting at all...

Besides, movies based on games and games based on movies usualy... SUCK... I think the main reason for that, is the fact that one medium tries to compete with the other in presentation or storytelling... and fails... Undecided

mhmm, yeah, i mean, every single game based movie has gotten under 2.5 out of 5.
Tomb Raider
Doom

you name it, they're all crappy. Last i heard, the following games are going to be made into movies:

Bioshock - early stages
Lost planet - very early stages
Prince of persia - sands of time- early to mid development.

-and-

God forbid...

Halo.

There are exceptions to the rule. Personally I think the Resident Evil and Silent Hill movies are more than decent. However, I've still yet to see an awesome movie based on a game. Tongue

Video game movies are meant to fail.
You hear all the time about movies like Bioshock, Gears of War.. but they never seem to release. There are like 15 video game movies that are "on hold". I wish there could be just ONE good video game movie.

The adaptation of Max Payne was... simply PAIN (pun intended, it's present in the protagonist's name anyway). Maybe not the most craptastic of game-based movies, but still flawed in many ways (atmosphere and music were good, but bye bye quality storytelling...). I blame the director (just look at the other flicks he's directed so far... eww...).

One of the reasons, why they fail is... that the director and whole staff don't take the making of this kind of adaptation as seriously as any other adaptable work of art (yes, good games are art, aren't they ?). The other reason might be the simple incompatibility or natural competition of two quite different types of media.

Yeah. I wish someone did a game-movie and did it seriously.
Like making Cliff Blezinski the director for the Gears of War movie. That would kick ass, that guy really has a passion for video gaming. I simply can't understand why game developers lend their games out to people like Uwe Boll. House of the Dead and 2 were actually really good games, but then Uwe made a craptastic movie and ever since the games have gotten worse and worse.

Simon Hunter (directed the Mutant Chronicles) is working on a movie with Paradox... could it be the Penumbra movie?

Quote:QE:What's next after The Mutant Chronicles? Got any dream projects on the back burner? Anymore epic, mind boggling scifi?

SH:I am working with Paradox (the company behind MC and Conan) on a project but I cannot say more at the moment -(it's not Conan!) I will let you know. I would love to do a thriller - that is my favorite genre and I have a few pet projects I am pushing.

yeah, look, to make a good movie out of the game, prepare to have all the dialogue in the game wiped, and the storyline to be rewritten.
Movies and games are seperate, games you live it, movies you see it through third person, and know what will happen.
to turn a movie into a game is incredibly complex, and most writers just can't do it.

RE: Penumbra the Movie : Who would be your ideal cast ? - Tommy Gun - 01-13-2009

Just having a bit of a think. For the game to be successfully merged into a movie, prepare for vital parts of the game to left out, new characters to appear, and the whole layout of the mine/ facility changed.
Let's face it, to my knowledge/ little research, there has not been a single movie with only one character we see. (if we exclude silents). To get the movie running, and have the enmies introduced in movie style, you would need a second character, e.g, a brother. To introduce dog, have brother starts getting attacked by dog, on ground, yelling, phillip runs out of camera for a few seconds, enters back into camera view then hits the dog with a pick axe, thus, the enemies are introduced, and a weapon is sucessfully implemented, not all that different from "Shaun of the Dead."
Problem is, that Script writers are normally afraid to greatly alter the script, and they want to stick with the material in the game, and so, they fail, because games and movies are two completely different types of media.
for a good game=movie, Be prepared to have a completely different layout of the plot to what the game is, and be prepared for scenes to be left out.
Sorry for the thread necromancy. Wink
