Steam: Crash when entering the Infirmary - thintalle -  02-14-2009
 
 
I have an issue when trying to enter the Infirmary. I get the loading screen and then get thrown back to the desktop, while the game is still running in the background. After a few seconds Vista64 tells me the game is no longer responding and I close it. I can't alt-tab back into it either, screen just stays black when I try.

I have the same problem. ATI 4870, Catalyst 9.2 and Vista 64. 
 
The level seems to actually load, you can hear it in the background, but the screen is black and then a second later it minimises and Windows shows the display driver reset message in the tray, and then if I click the mouse I get the app not responding message. 
 
Hyperthreading and hardware sound are both off.

I'm not entirely sure if it really does load successfully in the background. I can only hear it sometimes and that could just be sounds from the previous level still playing. 
 
I think this is the right save. It's the newest file in the auto folder and should start near the bit when you have to go back through the poisonous gas chamber. Then walk up to the dead scientist to start playing that audio "cutscene" and then head off left to the infirmary. 
 
EDIT: BTW, when messing about with settings I found out that the game will crash on launch if triple buffering is enabled in the ATI control panel. Lots of people will have that enabled to help with vsync issues and it seems to match up to some crash reports on this forum.

hm the save worked for me, I saw an odd thing in the log that I hoped could be the cause but it wasn't. do not have any suggestions at the moment i'm afraid, the only thing that I can see here is similar to the other thread with a crash on loading level and that is that the game seems to crash when loading stereo audio files, but that the common factor for users seems to be the graphics card.

For the record, I have exactly the same symptoms. Steam version, same OS, but with an ATI 4850 and Cat 9.3. Did anyone ever find a solution? :

Yes. I usually leave it off. It seems to be a lot of trouble... I am also not using triple buffering, which I saw in another thread may cause issues.

I'm still interested in this. I think I've tried with Catalysts 9.1-9.3 over the months and still have the problem (we should be up to 9.5 or 9.6 now so I guess I could try them?) and I don't think it's a driver problem. 
 
I don't want to start Requiem without getting all the story from Black Plague, and other than this both Overture and Black Plague were pretty much bug free for me (maybe a crash to desktop once or twice in Overture iirc). 
 
Overall it sounds exactly like the Mess Hall crash but in a different location so hopefully this thread http://www.frictionalgames.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=2931 will eventually fix our problem too. 
 
Are all three of us on Vista 64 + ATI?
