I really want to play Half-Life 2 but have not finished Half-Life (the first)... is it ok if I skip it? I've tried it but I just can't get through it.

Half Life 1's plot is actually really simple. The main thing you need to know is that a huge accident happened at Black mesa, and that G-Man is interested in you.

All Half-Life 1 is you shoot stuff, you go to an alien planet, you shoot stuff, get put into stasis by a creepy guy in a suit who's face is made out of like 2 polygons.

As of September 2nd, 2014, I've left the Frictional forums. Check my profile for more details.

I was looking for something a bit more constructive than that.

He's not kidding. It is one of the greatest FPSs of all time. You really should beat it if you can.

And there's nothing really constructive beyond what Zaffre, and I haven't already said. It's really that simple.

I am not denying the fact that the Half-Life games are good BUT the Half-Life games are some of the most overrated games of all time. I'm not saying I dislike them but I think they get way too much praise and shun other games.

Oookkkkaaayyyy...I'm not looking to turn this simple question thread into a discussion on the quality of Half Life games. You got your answer, I think we can move on now.

I've played 60% of the first Half-Life game and then I just get bored with it... I am just wondering if I will be missing any key elements before I go onto the new games.

You can safely play the second game without playing the first.
However, as Kreekakon and Zaffre have said, it's recommended to play through the first one. I, myself, have only beaten it a few months ago. It's definitely worth the time.

RE: Skip to HL2?

I would try finish it if you can, though having said that I know how old a game it is now and if you didn't play it in it's day then it's hard to get into it really.

I have a good understanding of how games age and all that but if I haven't played an old game when it came out, chances are I wouldn't be able to play something as old as half life for the first time in 2012 and enjoy it really. But the half life series is definately one of the best, you won't miss much in terms of story if you skipped it out. HL2 is really where the story magic begins =3
