Hi folks,

I'm trying to get Penumbra started, but it doesn't work at all. Everytime I get an error telling me my graphic card doesn't support vertex shader.
But that's not true. What's missing here is a real support.
So what shall I do? Update my drivers?
I've installed several drivers (with unistallation etc. of course) and the latest beta 177.92.

I'd really like to play Penumbra, but it seems to be impossible with any 8800GT, doesn't it?

Make sure that you uninstall the old drivers, reboot the computer and then install the new drivers.

Odd. It works perfectly here.. But I have an 8800GTS, but should that be any differences really?

I really guess yes .... see here

Later, I will try the second episode. Maybe I won't have the same problem. But actually it will be a really pity beginnig with episode two without knowing things from episode one ....

Adding to this thread as it's the same problem.

I have a rig more than enough to handle the game. Drivers are up to date, uninstalled correctly, drivers cleaned in safe mode, reinstalled blah blah as perfectly and cleanly installed as possible.

From just 15mins of looking at this forum it is plain to see that this game does not support 8800gt cards (note the "gt") due to the vertex error.

Is this problem being addressed? I'll uninstall the game for the time being and hope a patch comes in the near future to fix the issue with these cards.
(or has support for the game itself ended?)

sharrow: This is a driver issue since the problem can only arise if the OpenGL driver reports that there is no vertex shader support.

I am afraid this makes it impossible to do any sort of patch to fix the problem.

Just to make sure, does games like Doom 3 and Prey (that both use OpenGL) work on your computer?

Did you try using linux? If you have a linux installation at hand, you should give the linux demo a try. If it works, you can rule out hardware issues for sure.

Under the /Overture(whatever it may be for you)/config directory in default_settings.cfg under the Graphics subsection make sure you have ForceFP="AUTO" ForceVP="AUTO" otherwise you'll get that error. I was experimenting with different profile settings and it didn't seem to like me messing around with it. Did you get all the patches?

How do you force different profiles anyway? How would I use GLSLV & GLSLF if I wanted to? Is it possible? Thanks.

i have the same problem. i have an nvidia geforce 8800 gts 512, but get the same error message. i downloaded some updated drivers from nvidia's website ... went into device manager and uninstalled the current driver, rebooted, installed the new driver and still got the vector shaders error ... bleh!!!!
