Remakes of older games

After reading up about companies remaking Oddworld and creating a Legacy of Kain MMO, I found myself becoming rather cynical about originality in the gaming industry. Not that I feel a reactionary revulsion of a game being remade with modern graphics and such, I think it's best to at least give these things a try, but it seems that more often than out, all that's added are higher resolution graphics, some fan-service, and a few extra dynamic camera angled shots.
On the other hand, it's fun to see that the games haven't been entirely forgotten, and perhaps get a new audience to enjoy these games.

What do you think? In general, do you enjoy modern remakes, write them off, or do you maintain cautious optimism and give them a try?

I actually don't mind remakes at all. It's natural that as time passes, and tech improves that you feel some of your older pieces of work are lacking in comparison due to their old age, and are feeling like breathing new life into the project.

Man I loved Oddworld Stranger's Wrath! Such a fun game. Nice to see a remake of it ^^
Nah, I don't mind remakes. With new tech you can update your games to keep them alive for new audiences as well as keep them enjoyable for the fans. Just because a game is old doesn't mean it's bad, so why not give it a nice polish? Like Halo Anniversary, a perfect remake of one of my favourite games of all time.
I've noticed with a lot of old games that I remember loving and being all nostalgic about that when I go back to play the game I discover how outdated the gameplay is and that the game just isn't enjoyable anymore due to this. A remake keeps them fresh. That said, remakes should perhaps not get priority over new IPConfused, I think they should be kept as sideprojects unless there's nothing better for the developer to do.

I honestly think HD remakes are great. Halo CE Anniversary is a great example to go on. It kept the exact same gameplay and feel, but gave a beautiful new visual overhaul and even allowed you to press the Select button and switch between before and after. Imagine the thing you love just got even better, what are the cons? You know?

On the other hand though, there are poor excuses, such as Zelda: The Windwaker HD. I understand you can't do much different on textures as the artstyle was defined, but all they did was add better lighting and shaders. Not worth it in my opinion.

I feel if there was one game to remake to its glory, it'd be either Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Zelda: Majora's Mask. These games in the level of Twilight Princess would have me awake at night wanting it. hnnnnnnnnnngggggggg...

Nice to see another Oddworld fan!
I'm glad to see that other people still remember that game, and also happy to see it getting polished up.
And I agree about developers using them as side projects. If they loved the game, it's cool to be able to share it with a new crowd and give it a fresh face.
Thanks for sharing your opinions, guys.

Not a fan of remakes in general, not just games.
I get very attached to everything a thing posses, the visual style, sounds, etc. And I love the feeling of nostalgia you get when looking at old screenshots.
The new polished versions are just "not the same" to me. They don't give me that feeling, quite the contrary, I feel like I need to criticize it as harshly as I can and God forbid they do something wrong with the thing I love..
Not saying remakes are bad, not saying they shouldn't exist, I'm just not a remake person.

RE: Remakes of older games

I like the HD-remakes of games, which were at first only available for the PS2 (or another platform), like the Shadow of the Colossus and ICO remake. Since the PS3 (except for the first models) is not able to play PS2 games, it's a great thing. Many people who missed one of these fantastic games have now the chance to make up leeway without buying old hardware.

I think this is still a valid stance. It makes sense that a more polished, new version of the game wouldn't hold the same value as the game that gave you those memories in the first place.
