RE: Religion

I wouldn't say the universe is conscious, but it gets really weird when you look at it closely and we don't know why.

Also, your questions about choice would probably be better suited to a physics forum, because I don't think any of us are qualified to address nitpicks about quantum mechanics or general relativity.

RE: Religion

i don't understand these threads

you could seriously argue for 100 pages and absolutely no one would change their mind on the matter at all

it seriously just comes down to everyone jerking off over their own beliefs continuously

So everyone's fapping? Well I better get into the party.

Good point, but this applies to almost every discussion whether it's religion, politics, or any other belief system. So by that logic we shouldn't be talking about these things at all.

RE: Religion

I find it more interesting to pick concepts and theories apart and questioning them rather than imposing my own believes because most of the time I'm skeptical of them as well. I've heard people say I'm annoying to discuss with because of that, because I "don't have an opinion", which is hilarious because I certainly have opinions, the difference though is that I'm just as ready to lean on them as I am to question them, and it confuses some people I know.

EDIT: Except a few things, some things I'm stuborn about. No way around that.

RE: Religion

but like with politics ive actually seen someone's opinion swayed by an argument online

i don't think ive ever seen someone's religious beliefs change without them actively seeking out new ideas themselves

Well the majority doesn't change their minds no matter what, but for example I was a theist once, but then I took an arrow in the knee... Well not really Tongue Then I became an angostic. So there are always exceptions.

It doesn't matter if no one changes their minds. That's not the point of discussions.

In my opinion just simply discussing different views on a matter, and seeing things from different perspectives is already good enough for a discussion to be deemed successful. No one needs to change their mind, all they need to do is think about things.

Opinions rarely change solely on being convinced to change. Most of the time an argument or outside opinion can be the catalyst to start thinking about their situation or opinion and then change through introspection. If that was what you meant then nevermind! Tongue

Agreed, most discussions I have with my friends and family is about deepening my own understanding of their perspective (and vice versa) and not to engage in a tug-of-war over who's right or wrong, and that's why I'm mostly ambigious about my opinions on a lot of things.
