A near-future setting would explain why the human technology displayed in SOMA isn't ridiculously implausible.

RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread

I wonder if it's set 19 years from now (2014) or from the game's release date (2015). Not that it matters all that much!

It's a pretty dark thought to imagine being in a facility at the bottom of the ocean while everyone (or almost everyone) on the surface is dead. It gives me the same sensation in my chest as when I imagine being buried alive in a secret grave; a complete, total and irretrievable loss of connection with your life and your loved ones. I anticipate good (by which I mean "harrowing") things for this game.

I'm really starting to like the idea that the reason the game takes place under the sea is because a catastrophic meteor storm pretty much destroyed all the land on the surface. It just really works somehow, sort of a new take on an apocalypse.

Shoots late May-June, in the Seattle, WA area.
Man if the damage is less worse and it was a nuclear attack, Metro 2033 and SOMA could be in the same universe!

This could be another reason for the protagonists being isolated - there is no homebase to contact.

I wonder if the "meteor strike" is related to the aliens.

"Apophis" is the name of an asteroid that comes close to earth in 2029 and 2036, the timeframe when the game takes place.
