Hi, it stopped working for me as well.

Verifying found 6 files (there were some libs missing under lib64) but that did not change anything. I also verified some time before the update and there were no problems then.

Comparing what the game does now vs. an earlier apitrace, it looks like it fails to create a GL context because it requests GL version 3.2 with the compatibility profile whereas before it used the core profile.

Mesa does not and will never support compatibility profiles above version 3.0.

So, there is no hope it will be fixed?

Well, it can be fixed in the game - there is never a good reason to require a compat profile.

Besides, it worked with a core profile before and still works if it magically gets a core profile - it just doesn't ask for one.

What kind of magic is it? I tried "MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=3.3COMPAT", but SOMA still fails to start.

Mesa doesn't have an environment variable for this - you'd need to patch mesa or modify the request sent by the game.

However that's not needed any more as with the latest update the game works out of the box again.

I'm experiencing the same issue in Ubuntu 14.04 and 15.10 with Radeon HD 6670 under the open source drivers.

Installing the proprietary drivers isn't an option for me, because it brick the entire operating system including the fail-safe terminal. And because I have been an active part in the Ubuntu Quality Assurance team for a long time, I know these drivers are becoming more and more unmaintained in favour of open source ones.

When proprietary drivers used to work it made the desktop slow, and some games stopped working. On the other side, I have no issue with open source drivers in other games apart from Soma.

Here you have a game-play showing the issue:

Thanks Wink

It's been working fine on a Radeon 7750 in Xubuntu 15.10 x64 for me. No fancy xorg bleeding edge repos, just out of the box and with the occasional intermittent patch. Other than in-game gamma adjustment not working - which I work around by running xgamma in a terminal, running the game, then setting gamma back to normal at the command line afterward - it's been A-OK at 720p with mostly medium detail settings. Sorry to hear people are having problems!

Worked for you since day number one, or it started working some time latter?

It works since day one with the radeonsi driver (Radeon HD 7750 or higher) but afaik there has been no progress for the r600g driver (used for older hardware).

Since this seems to only affect one driver for one hardware vendor it is most likely a driver issue and needs to be fixed there. The best Frictional can do here (besides contributing to the driver themselves, which is unreasonable) is to make sure that the right driver developers have a copy of the game. Your best bet is to follow and perhaps add your information to this bug report: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92229
