Was this on all levels or a specific level?  
Can you provide the main_setting.cfg and new copy of the hpl.log and a saved game if it is a specific level.
So, I just started up the game, set all the options that had a Low setting to Low, and started a new game.  I still have the darkness problem.  (Oh, and in answer to your last question, this was a universal problem, on every level.  I played all the way up to the end of the sewer level, where you climb a really long ladder, and then I ran into a separate crash problem that brought me to the forum; I heard that probably I'd have to start over, in order to get the benefits of the patch that fixed that crash problem, and I figured if I have to start over anyways I'd like to also get the lighting fixed, first.  I've had real problems with running out of tinderboxes and lantern oil, which I doubt I'd be having if the lighting was working right.)

Looking at the log, it kinda looks to me like a bunch of the files that describe lighting are either missing, or not in the directory where the program expects to find them.  It has a bunch of lines of the form: "ERROR: Could not find light "
name"
