"Your graphics card does not support vertex shaders!"

I have:
- A NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT with the latest international graphic driver (v93.71)
- 1024 MB RAM
- An Intel® Core™2 CPU - 6400 @ 2.13GHz (2 CPUs)
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, build 2600)

The log says after trying to start the game:

And well, it does not work... (The original Penumbra from before the commercial release worked on the very same PC) I don't understand.

I downloaded from NVIDIA.com at drivers section:
Graphics Driver - GeForce and TNT2 - Windows XP/2000

Does anyone know the problem or has the same problem? Please tell me if you need more info! All I want is to play this game (I loved the original Penumbra, didn't come far though).

I have the same problem. I'm on a laptop with an ATI 200M under Vista. 1GB RAM, upgraded to latest drivers ("7-3_vista32_dd_ccc_enu_43741.exe") to no effect. Also tried screwing around with compatibility mode settings without success.

If you get this error then either your graphics card simply is not capable of running Penumbra or the drivers have very poor OpenGL support. I would bet on the latter.

Does any other OpenGL based games like Doom 3 work? Also try uninstall the graphics drivers before installing the new one, might be some screwup.

jimmybob:
This might simply be that the ATI vista drivers has not added full OpenGL support yet. For some reason card manufactorers seem not to think OpenGL is that much needed...

As both your cards are ones that has been reported functioning by others it's most likekely that something is conflicting.

To make sure you really update the drivers uninstall them first, reboot and then install again.

Also do the same for the audio card drivers, just to be sure.
