Penumbra collection games barfs on me when attempting to start them

Have you tried another resolution than 800*600? You can edit the cfg file in ~/.frictionalgames/penumbra../

I found resolution-settings in "~/PenumbraCollection/Overture/config/default_settings.cfg" but changing the resolution made no difference. Still the same result. Same messages in console and hpl.log.
