Detaching a rope

I already know ropes are a tricky as hell thing to work with, so I'm wondering if there's anyway to actually detach a rope from something, or at least make it appear as if it is.

I have a rope that is holding something up from the floor through a pulley, anchored to a hook on the wall. I would like the player to use an item on that hook to detach the rope and have it dangle loosely.
