Solved: 8 Years, 8 Months, 4 Weeks ago FATAL ERROR (OpenAL)

after installing the patch 1.02, upon opening the game, it crashes with "Failed! Check your OpenAL installation."

I downloaded and installed the latest OpenAL binary from the official site, but that hasn't fixed it.
