Kennels (spoiler)

Despite looking at a walk through, I'm stuck in the kennels. I understand that when I activate the electrical panel in the room at the end of the right corridor, this is supposed to turn on lights in the darkened (left) corridor. However, after I activate the panel and run back to the left corridor, no lights are on.

Any idea what I may be doing wrong? FWIW, I've installed the 1.0.1 patch to my DVD version of the game.

PS. I've blocked the two openings in the wall in the right corridor with the metal crates.
