Overture crashes at last level the bright hydralic door you use crowbar on

I have exactly the same problem. How do you stop the game being updated through Steam? Even when I state that I don't want it kept up to date it installs the patch anyway before launching the game (Steam has some serious, serious problems. But that's another debate).
